Chief Perfusionist Wins Award

CVTSA is proud to announce that David Fitzgerald, CCP, the chief perfusionist at the Inova Heart and Vascular Institute was awarded the national American Society of ExtraCorporeal Technology (AmSECT) award for Excellence in Perfusion.

This prestigious award, the highest in the field, is given annually to one perfusionist who demonstrates excellence and best exemplifies creativity and intellectual honesty in perfusion. Dave received the award for being a consummate professional whose knowledge of perfusion is matched by his ability to maintain a sense of humor – both key elements in his success as Chief of Perfusion.

In recent years, Dave has achieved many accomplishments including the implementation and maintenance of a pediatric ecmo service and a sophisticated blood conservation program for both adult and pediatric patients. He has also published a number of papers and spoken nationally about this work. Under his direction CVTSA and Inova now train perfusion students from some of the finest schools. Dave’s work has directly benefitted scores of patients and resulted in improved efficiencies and clinical outcomes.

Dave is a tremendous asset to the cardiac surgery team and to Inova. We are proud to work alongside him each and every day.
